Do you ever wonder why you aren’t getting what you want?

Do you want to lose weight like Sue and Her husband , get a better job, or have a happier, more fulfilling relationship with your husband, wife, or child?

Do you feel like you are trying so hard to make something happen and it’s just not working?

Often times when we feel like we are spinning our wheels it’s because we don’t have real clarity about what it is we truly want.

Sometimes if you are honest with yourself, you realize that you don’t know what you want.

before getting what you want do you know what you Don’t Want?

An overweight condition, illness, or an unhealthy relationship...

The good news is that:

we can use what we don’t want as a guidepost to help us get to what we do want.

To get what you want take a moment and write down the things in your life that aren’t working for you...

Your list may look like this:

  • Tension in my relationship with my son.
  • No time for my friends.
  • The drudgery of having to get up and go to work day in and day out, working at a job that doesn’t fulfill me.
  • Having no time to exercise.

When you see your thoughts on paper, it helps you to become clearer about them.

Now as you look at that list, simply turn the statements around to the positive, and that will help you to know what you do, in fact, want.

So in this case, you may write down:

  • A relationship with my child that reflects the deep love I feel for him.
  • Quality time with my friends where we can have fun and really enjoy each other and listen to each other.
  • More free time and/or a career that I am passionate about.
  • Doing life’s work that makes me want to jump out of bed in the morning.
  • Being physically active every day either playing tennis, swimming, or taking a long walk.

Now that you have a better idea of what you actually want...

let’s take a look at...

getting what you want: why you don’t have it yet in your life.

To do that, let’s take a look at the subconscious mind.

The subconscious part of the mind is like a computer...It runs on programming.

It doesn’t stop to evaluate whether or not the programming makes sense. It just operates automatically.

The subconscious part of the mind is what takes over whenever we are doing any kind of familiar activity such as getting dressed in the morning or driving to a routine location.

It makes life easy... With the subconscious pattern activated, we don’t have to give our full attention to everything we are doing.

The problem is, once a pattern is in place, even if we don’t like it, that pattern will continue until we change it.

These patterns are not only behavioral habits but thought patterns, too.

The only difference between a “positive” person and a “negative” person is the quality of thought they are in the habit of repeating.

It is said that we think approximately 60,000 thoughts per day.

Unfortunately, most of them are the same thoughts that were running through our minds yesterday.

plant new thoughts in the subconscious mind

If we want to have a new experience in our lives and achieve the goals that are important to us we are going to have to plant new thoughts in the subconscious mind.

To create a different result our thoughts are going to have to be different than they were.

The way we do that is with positive affirmations.

Though it may seem unnatural to you to use positive affirmations, the truth is that you are affirming all day long.

The problem is, if you are like so many of us, you are affirming negative statements.

Changing your thought patterns to be more uplifting and productive simply takes a commitment to do so and practice.

It’s very simple but not necessarily easy...

At first, you are going to have to keep reminding yourself to think in a more positive, self-affirming way.  Over time it will become more natural.

One of the best ways to get started is to notice the negative thoughts that you think of routinely and simply turn them around to the positive.

Here are some examples.

  • “My son is out of control. I am so annoyed with him! I am a terrible Mother!”

This can be turned around to:

  • “I can have my peace and serenity no matter how my son is choosing to act in this moment.  I am a wonderful Mother and in this moment my actions are guided by wisdom and love.”
  • “I hate my job.”
  • “I have many talents and skills that I am excited about bringing forth in the world.  I am determined to attract the perfect job for myself.”
  • “I have no time for my friends.”
  • “Getting together with my close friends is a priority.  Once a month I schedule a get-together that I am absolutely committed to. I look forward to laughing and sharing myself with those who I love.”
  • “Exercise is so hard and boring.”
  • “Every day I move my body in ways that are nourishing and pleasurable.  Each day it gets easier.”

The more you practice affirming positive statements the more natural doing so becomes...

At first, when you start using affirmations you may feel like you’re telling yourself a lie.

But...

Just like we begin to believe the lies we tell ourselves and act on them, we soon begin to believe the positive statements we tell ourselves as well.

The subconscious part of the mind responds to repetition and strong emotion.

When you repeat your affirmations, say them like you mean them with strong emotion...

It’s the feeling you have when you are stating your affirmations that matters, not the words themselves.

As you recite your positive affirmations, you should feel a sense of relief and peace.

If you do not, it’s important to tweak and re-write your affirmations...

The key to making permanent changes in your life is to change your feeling and thought patterns.  It’s what you feel that draws your experience to you.

For example,

if you are feeling angry, you are likely to draw angry people or experiences to yourself.

If you are feeling anger, it’s not that you are bad or wrong. It's just that, unfortunately, you are going to draw more of the same to yourself, if you harbor the resentment for a long period of time without releasing it.

The reason why negative statements have such power over our lives, oftentimes, is because we repeat them so readily and frequently and declare them with great gusto.

We must use the same principle to make our positive affirmations stick.

Repeat positive, uplifting statements all day long both to yourself and aloud.

We can’t recite affirmations too often, because we are so conditioned to think and respond negatively.

One of the core issues for most of us is that we are not loving and honoring ourselves enough...

Sometimes we may not think that’s true because we appear to be quite self-centered.

But if you look more deeply, you may see that at a deeper level, you feel inadequate or unworthy to accept all the good that is possible for you.

Look in the mirror each day and affirm:
  • “I am whole, perfect, and complete.”
  • “I am strong, centered, and calm.”
  • “I make excellent choices.”
  • “My heart is full of love.”
  • “I am a blessing to others and my life is truly blessed.”
  • “I love myself and deserve to be happy.”

At first, it may be challenging to repeat these phrases to yourself while gazing in the mirror, but make it a daily practice.

When you hear yourself criticizing yourself, stop, apologize to yourself, and encourage yourself as you would encourage a child who you loved dearly.

Even though you are now in a grown-up body, you haven’t outgrown the need for recognition, appreciation, and love.

Begin by giving it to yourself each day as you look in the mirror and you will soon see that love reflected back to you in the world.
